Black Lives Matter, by Lanka Tattersall

Book, Web

A book, web, and mobile site for Lanka Tattersall’s essay on Kerry James Marshall.

For the book, I considered Marshall’s use of the color black in his paintings and tied it into my design. I included black boxes as a recurring motif, to show the painting titles and footnote citations. For the citations, I used a lower opacity for the black box to add a sense of hierarchy and to keep the space more open in the spreads.

For the web, I kept the same recurring motifs that I used in the book. However, with this format I was able to use the space more to my advantage when it came to images. I kept the text to one side of the page and utilized running shoulders instead of running headers. This allowed for the ability to add more variation when it came to how I displayed the images.

For the mobile site, I had to take into consideration the small size of the screen. The text takes up most of the page for easy readability. To make up for this, I added a lot of room to breathe when it came to the gaps between images and new paragraphs. The pull quotes, while larger than the body copy in the other platforms, is smaller and centered in the mobile site to add more open space.
